Back to blog Honey…I’m Famous!

Honey…I’m Famous!

The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology is maintaining a beehive on behalf of 2BScientific. Their beekeepers will regularly send us updates on how their buzzy bees are doing – below is the latest blog!

Since the last post the LMBs have been working like…well…bees and have produced a nice crop of honey in the first half of the season. Geoff and Jo filled 60 x 1lb jars and those went on sale at reception in the LMB at 12:04pm on Tuesday 16th July and sold out in just over 2 hours at 2:21pm the very same day! This suggests that the staff in the LMB might be partial to the odd slice of toast and honey. All proceeds from the sale of the honey are being re-invested into the upkeep of the LMBees.

The LMBees have found fame at last and you can watch them going around their daily buzziness via a live stream (only accessible within the LMB) http://intranet.lmb.internal/support-services/environment/lmbees/, thanks to the IT and Estates teams at the LMB for helping set this up. There is talk that we might even carry out some LMBee tracking using machine learning (if time permits outside normal scientific business) so watching this space.

Screen grab from the LMBCam…we really hope the weather improves for our LMBees

Our third hive is now well established and, thanks to the efforts of Geoff and Jo, all the bees are doing well. If there is an improvement in the weather over the next few weeks then we may be able to have another harvest of honey before the end of the season. Let’s hope so.

Bye for now….

Stay tuned to know more
