Monkeypox and Relevant Products

Monkeypox is a virus that was discovered to be present in humans in 1970, but a more recent outbreak in 2022 is causing a gradual increase of global discussion. This is likely due to both its similarity to SARS-CoV-19 with regards to isolation and also a lack of full knowledge surrounding the virus.

Zoonotic diseases such as this can be transmitted from person to animal, but in this case, can be human to human via lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated material. Symptoms of monkeypox are somewhat similar to that of smallpox, although the main differences are that monkeypox is less easily transmissible and causes swelling of the lymph nodes, which smallpox does not. The rash begins with maculopapular lesions (comprised of both flat and raised skin wounds) ranging between 2-5mm in diameter which have been synonymous with the 2022 outbreak.

Monkeypox is a double-stranded DNA virus that can be vaccinated against. Presently, the vaccines available have an 85% effectiveness. There is however the possibility to detect and repair mutations more efficiently due to it not being comprised of RNA.

Since it is a form of orthopoxvirus, the structure of the virus itself is enveloped with cuboid geometries alongside a linear DNA genome ranging between 170-250 kilobases. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the preferred laboratory test due to its consistent accuracy and sensitivity, though for it to produce accurate results, fluid from vesicles and pustules should be used. In addition to this is the utilisation of Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) as well as immunofluorescence to detect the presence of antigens, proteins and glycoproteins in biological samples.

2BScientific Ltd offers a range of products that can benefit investigations and studies with regards to monkeypox. This includes monkeypox ELISA kits, Anti-Monkeypox virus (to be used with ELISA and immunofluorescence) as well as a wide selection of ELISA, PCR and immunofluorescence products.
